A palace with which pages of French history are bonded, and a museum that cannot be ignored. To visit Paris and not see the Louvre is unthinkable. In this article: the insides of the Louvre, where to buy tickets so as not to stand in line and when is the best time to visit.

Work hours: every day 9.00—18.00(except Tuesday, 1st of January, 1st of May and 25th of December), on the New Years and Christmas eve 9.00—17.00.

The lifehack – it’s better to visit Louvre on Wednesday and Friday, since the museum is opened till 21:45 on these days.

How to get there: you can either get a train ride from subway station Palais-Royal to Musee du Louvre, or travel by foot and have an opportunity to get a closer look on the historical part of the Paris.

Skipping  the line to the Louvre

To visit the most exciting museum in Paris without standing in line, you just need to choose between two ways:

  • buy a Paris museum pass,
  • buy a ticket to the Louvre in advance.

The Louvre is included in the Paris museum card – Paris myseum pass. If you are going to visit plenty attractions, you can buy it in advance on the website. Once you receive your card, you will need to make sure your visitation time is booked. To do this, on the Louvre website, you reserve it absolutely free of charge, indicating the serial number of your card. To enter the Louvre, you show your Paris Museum pass and booking confirmation from the Louvre website.

If you are not going to use the Paris pass, consider purchasing your ticket in advance here. The queues at the Louvre, especially in the high season, are just huge!

If you own an electronic ticket, there is a possibility of taking a child with you for free, for whom it is not needed (the same rules for using the Paris myseum pass).

Louvre main sightseeings

To find what the soul is striving for, you need to stock up on a museum plan at the entrance: three buildings, four levels. Denon looks out at the Seine, Richelieu, standing on the street of shopaholics Rivoli, and Sully.

Many masterpieces presented in the halls of this palace-museum are familiar to us from childhood: Nika of Samothrace, Venus de Milo, La Gioconda … Of course, you need to see them “alive”, but you should also pay attention to the exquisit Egyptian collection, paintings of the Italian Renaissance (many paintings compete with Mona Lisa), gloomy Spaniards and – just a must! – Bruegel and Vermeer (they are on the 3rd floor in the Richelieu building, but it’s worth getting to them).

Where to start and how to end everyone chooses for themselves, but I would recommend ending your visit to the Louvre on the ground level, in the kingdom of sculpture. There, at half past nine in the evening, is a ringing silence, almost a 100% guarantee that you will be alone there.

And it will be the perfect end to a busy day. It’s time to watch the sunset on the Arc de Triomphe!

To the Louvre with a guided tour

I’ve been to the Louvre four times. Twice on my own and twice with a guided tour. A visit to the Louvre on your own and a guided visit are two different experiences. It is one thing to be alone with masterpieces, but an entirely different thing to be able to hear and learn a lot of new things, which, most likely, will not reach your hands in the process of preparing for a trip. The thing is that you can order not only a “survey” from an individual guide, but also a program tailored only to your interests. For example, you can arrange what exactly you want to see, or order a “children’s” excursion – and then your child will not have to be bored, and you – to be stressed about him not being interested enough in masterpieces there. In general, I strongly recommend talking the nuances over with the guide, and then the Louvre will unveil its riches  to you in a completely different way.
